The coffee industry, coffee processing plants in particular and to a lesser
extent soluble coffee manufacturers, is one of the main sources of contamination
in Latin America.
Coffee processing plants are making use of new
systems (dry depulping, recycling transport water, dry degumming, etc)
to reduce water consumption which in turn reduces their wastewater production.
Environmentally friendly coffee processing plants (with low water consumption
per ton of coffee processed) produce a relatively dry pulp that can be
transported by blowers and easily composted.
The wastewater has a COD concentration in excess of 2,000 ppm and in some
cases a paste-like syrup is produced. In this case, processing by composting
combined with the pulp and other fibrous waste from the area is a simple
way of disposing of this contaminant. In other cases, UASB anaerobic processing
plants have proved to be suitable (better cost/profit ratio), although
setting them up can take time (approximately 6 months if an adapted inoculum
is not available) and requires expertise. Aerobic post-treatment in ponds,
activated sludge or trickling filters provides the final effluent polishing.
