BIOTEC recommends the use of aerobic composting systems for the treatment
of garbage that transform organic matter into marketable compost.
Garbage in Latin America is different from garbage collected in Europe
or the United States. It has a higher organic matter content (on average
70%) and a lower recyclable material content. For this reason BIOTEC recommends
that the way it is processed should also be different. Instead of wasting
the organic matter, which is valuable for tropical soil, BIOTEC recommends
the use of aerobic composting systems that transform the garbage into
marketable compost.
While in Europe the organic content is composted after the non-biodegradable
content has been removed, in Tropical countries, for reasons of cost,
BIOTEC uses to compare this traditional system with composting garbage
in the state it arrives in, followed by a screening process 3 months later
to separate the fine, dry and mature compost that is suitable for marketing
from the non-biodegradable components, part of which can be recovered
for recycling.
