Rendering plants cook meat waste (bones, fat, blood, viscera, feathers, etc.) turning it into the raw material from which concentrated animal feed or organic fertiliser is made. These are waste "recycling" plants.

Rendering plants cook the meat waste using direct or indirect steam cookers.
The former generates very concentrated effluent with a COD of up to 200,000 ppm, while the latter generates only condensate with a low organic content but a high ammonia and sulfide content (odours).

BIOTEC recommends rendering plants opt for the latter on account of the reduced environmental impact and the lower costs of water and odour treatment compared with those of the direct steam cooking method.

BIOTEC helps rendering plants in re-engineering the process and imagines the best way of treating wash waters and condensed steam, and to remove non-condensable odours.
